What is the proper way to pack your items into a moving truck?

What is the proper way to pack your items into a moving truck?  Find out the proper way to pack items into  a moving truck.  Often when we leave a job we are told that no one had taken such good care of there belongings. To this day I am still confused as to how this has been happening. From our point of view there is only one proper way to protect furniture and other household items.

  1.  If it can go inside of a box, it should.    We advise our customers to box anything that will fit inside of a box.  This means that the small foot stool grandpa uses while reading should be put into an appropriate sized box.  The same holds true for any piece of furniture that will fit.  This includes chairs, stools, tables, small stands, lamps, artwork, pillows, cushions, lamp shades, small kitchen appliances.
  2.  If it cannot go inside a box, it must be wrapped.  After boxing up everything but the larger, bulkier pieces everything else must be encased in moving pads and then stretch wrapped to secure the padding to the furniture.  We like to call it 360 degrees of protection because all sides, front, back, underneath are protected with heavyweight, quilted moving pads and then stretch wrap.

The reason that we put everything in boxes is to make items easily stackable in a moving truck.  This is one of the best ways to pack your items into a moving truck.  When there are a bunch of miscellaneous items, it is difficult to make the best use out of the available cargo space.  This is done by putting anything that will fit and is not extremely heavy into a cardboard box.  Often we are asked about situations where the main item fills the box but leaves many voids.  This is taken care of by combining items in the box until everything is full.
Sometimes this means using packing paper to fill the void.

When cardboard boxes are not filled properly it opens the door for mishaps, such as sidewall failure, or total crushing of the box.  By doing this it will make the best use of the available space in each box.  This also provides the needed protection for the other boxes that will be used.  This is the first of our two steps to make sure everything is handled properly.

The second step involves the careful wrapping of all furniture with heavyweight, quilted moving pads and then stretch wrap.  After doing this to all of the furniture items they should be loaded into the moving truck.  The way you stack furniture in the truck with boxes is what separates the pros from weekend warriors.  As you can see in the picture below all furniture is completely wrapped and the items are packed tight to the sides and rafters.  This prevents the chances of something shifting around from the vibrations in the truck during transit.  The combination of these two steps is the proper way to pack your items into a moving truck.
