Boxes

First and foremost, the most basic yet crucial moving supply of them all: cardboard boxes. When gathering cardboard boxes for your move, it’s always a good idea to get different shapes and sizes. Larger boxes can hold a few lights to medium-weight items, while smaller boxes can be packed tightly with fragile or heavy items. Cardboard boxes are the standard, but some moving companies also offer plastic bins.

Packing Tape

Moving boxes are essential but will be pretty useless without any packing tape to keep them tightly sealed. When it comes time to pick up some packing tape, you’ll want to invest in high-quality, durable tape; otherwise, you could end up with torn boxes and broken belongings. To ensure you’ve got enough packing tape, it’s a good idea to get at least one packing tape dispenser per household resident.

Moving Blankets

During a move, blankets can serve two functions. Firstly, you can use them as furniture covers or wrap them around delicate items like wood cabinets to protect them from being scuffed or damaged. Secondly, you can use them to move heavy items. You can place a heavy item, such as a dresser, heavy box, or mattress, onto a moving blanket and drag it across the floor without the risk of damage.

Bubble Wrap

Beyond being absurdly fun to pop, bubble wrap is a must-have moving supply. When packing fragile items, such as glassware, fine china, or picture frames into boxes, you can wrap them in bubble wrap to cushion them and prevent them from damage during the move. Although bubble wrap costs more than packing paper, only a small amount is necessary for proper protection.

Box Cutter

Fortunately, most people already have a box cutter in their household. However, if you don’t, this is a tool you will definitely want to pick up ahead of your move. Not only will box cutters come in handy when it’s time to unpack, but they’ll also be useful for getting precise cuts of packing paper/bubble wrap.

Bungee Cord

Many loose items in the back of a moving truck are a disaster waiting to happen. That said, all boxes and furniture must be secured with bungee cords after loading them into the moving truck. Otherwise, items will roll around everywhere, possibly causing damage. Cargo straps and/or ropes can secure items if bungee cords are unavailable.

Sharpie/Labels

Labeling your boxes with a sharpie marker or attaching color-coded moving labels to your boxes is a must when moving to a new house. Otherwise, you're going to lose your items and your sanity. When marking your boxes, label what the box contains and what room it goes in.
