How to Move Electronics
Electronics are one of the most difficult items to handle, especially computers with all the additional plug-ins.
Whether you use a moving company or choose to do the job yourself, you should know the art to packing your electrical devices so nothing is damaged in transit. Electronics are one of the most difficult items to handle, especially computers with all the additional plug-ins.
The first thing to do is to draw a diagram of what goes where so that you will remember when the time comes to unpack. A smart thing to do is to keep your cables plugged into individual devices so when we drop everything off at the final destination, most of the wires will all ready be attached. The diagram and the wires that are still attached to the devices will make it easier to get your electronics to reboot when you reach your new home.
If you are fortunate enough to find the original boxes that your electronics came in, we will more than likely breathe a sigh of relief as these boxes are the most appropriate boxes for them. But it is also fine if you don’t. Most moving companies, like ourselves, provide packing materials like boxes, tape and packing beans.
However, if you can’t afford the filler then you should use sheets and blankets to fill up the spaces. Filling the space between your devices and the box is important because otherwise they will move around inside the box and be more susceptible to damage.
When packing a computer monitor, you should only use blankets to fill the spaces in the box. You should also cover the screen with a blanket so it is not scratched or shattered during the move.
Electronic equipment requires more care than just the boxes you put them in because they don’t fare very well in extreme temperatures, especially heat. If you have a long distance to get to your new home it might be a good idea to ask your movers to provide an truck with air conditioning. The same rule applies if your property is being held at an off-site storage facility.
One of the largest electronic devices that movers have to be careful with is a big screen television. These devices will need to be handled in a similar fashion to a flat screen monitor, but the first choice is always the original packaging. Most people don’t keep that much cardboard around, so wrap the connecting cords in place, grab yourself some big blankets and you are ready to go.
