How to Move an Aquarium

Gainesville Moving has moved some exotic items over the years. One of the most interesting objects our company has had to move is an aquarium.

As you can imagine, aquariums are complicated to move.

Depending on the size, aquariums may require the force to move a sofa. Because most aquariums are made of glass, they also require the mover to be delicate.

Because different types of aquariums require different approaches, the first thing you should do is find any instructions involved with assembly and disassembly.

While preparing for the movers, keep your fish in a holding tank. This way you do not damage your aquarium or harm the fish as you rearrange other furniture.

Are you sending your belongings by air or another type of shipment? You may need to take additional steps if you are traveling an extremely long distance to Gainesville.

However, research beforehand on how far the particular fish you have can move. Some fish are unable to survive trips that would take days to complete.

If that is the case, you probably will not want to take the fish with you. Have a plan to sell or give your fish away if need be.

If you are traveling short distances, you can use either a friend’s tank or a pet shop tank. You can even use water-filled bags for very short distances.

A general tip to moving your aquarium is to make sure that your fish are kept in a container with water that will support them. You want to keep them as safe as possible.

You will want to make sure your fish tank is disassembled.  All equipment must be disconnected, placed in protective containers and kept in a safe location while you move.

If you are going a very short distance, you may be able to keep some water in your tank to prevent bacteria death. Just make sure the water is kept in a location that will not spill or shake the container.

Otherwise, make sure that any plants that you keep in the aquarium are kept wet and ready to be placed back inside the aquarium once you have arrived at your destination.

Do your research when selecting a Gainesville moving company.  Make sure that the company has experience handling aquariums due to the complex procedures required.

Make sure that you ask the movers as many questions as possible regarding their experience handling aquariums. If you are not comfortable having them do it, simply move the aquarium yourself.

Aquariums are expensive and valuable. Protect yourself from losses resulting from a damaged aquarium.
