8 Things to do During Move Day
1: Keep children and pets out of the way
In order to better focus on your move and unpacking things correctly, keep children and pets out of the area and out of harms’ way. Arrange in advance a place for them to stay for the day, whether with friends or relatives. Otherwise, they can distract from the move and slow down the process.
2: Stay at your old house or apartment until everything has been packed
Check and re-check your inventory to make sure nothing has been left behind. After everything has been unpacked and move, take a final check to be sure everything is loaded.
3: Check the mover’s inventory list
On the list you should see a description of the condition of your belongings. Make sure the descriptions are correct, and that your inventory matches the mover’s inventory.
4: Give the movers your contact information
The movers will need to know how to reach you during the transfer of your belongings to your new home. Be available during the process of shipment in case the movers need to contact you.
5: When cleaning up after movers, obtain cleaning supplies in advance
You’ll need to clean your old home after the movers leave, but remember to have in your possession all the cleaning fluids and mops and buckets in advance. On the date of the move, you’ll be crunched for time and probably won’t be able to go to supermarkets looking for supplies.
6: Be available
The mover will be in contact with you at least one day before the truck with your things arrives at your new house or apartment to arrange an exact time to unload. Don’t waste the movers’ time (and your money) by making them wait because you were unavailable.
7: Craft a floor plan
The movers will need a floor plan so they know exactly where to put your belongings prior to loading the van or truck. Once everything has been moved into your new home, you’ll know where to find every piece of your luggage quickly. Most apartment complexes offer copies of their floor plans online, so you can easily find one to make copies of for yourself and your movers.
8: Stay positive and levelheaded
Moving only becomes stressful if you make it stressful. Relax, and with careful planning and arrangements, your move should be streamlined and smooth.
