Moving Mistakes to Avoid

Moving is a pain. You have many things to do during the move, and forgetting something is dreadfully easy. A few missteps could turn the move into a disaster. Creating a good plan long before moving day can help. Knowing some of the things that often cause issues is a good idea too. Seeing where other people have had problems gives you insight on what you must do to avoid those same mistakes. Here are some tips to help.

How Much Do You Have?

Determining the volume of items you need to move can be difficult. If you underestimate, the movers will not bring a truck large enough for all your items. If you overestimate, the truck will be too large. You pay for all that wasted space. Talk with moving companies about the space needed. They may send someone to your property to provide an appraisal. This is more accurate than merely guessing.

If you plan to store items, know the volume of your storage unit as well. You do not want it to be too small. Choosing a storage space that’s a bit larger than you need is a good option, as it gives you extra room for added storage if you need it later.

Consider the size of your new home. If your new home has less space, your furniture and belongings might not fit without looking cluttered. If that is the case, downsize. Get rid of the items you do not need. Sell them, give them away, or put them into storage.

Start Packing Early

People put off packing for many reasons. They believe they have plenty of time, and they say they’ll do it later. They have other things come up. Some just dread the idea and wait until the last minute. This makes moving a nightmare. Always start packing for the move as early as possible. As soon as you know the move will happen, begin packing items you do not use often. Start packing about a month before the move, so you have very little to do during the final week.

Label Boxes!

Whenever you pack a box and tape it, label it. Do not wait to do it later! You may forget what the box contains and have to open it. Labeling helps you know where the box will go on the moving truck, and where to put it in your new home before you unpack. The more detailed your labels, the better. If a box contains fragile items, indicate it in several locations on the box.

Understand the Insurance

Moving companies often have insurance, which covers your items during the move. Some policies are better than others are. Read them thoroughly to see what you pay for with the policy. For example, some movers have policies for high-value items. If packing valuable art or furniture, a high-value policy, or insurance from an outside source, might be a better idea.

The preceding are some of the problems many face while moving. Learn to head off these issues, and the move goes far more easily.
